LACC Supplemental Application for Admission of Students in Grades K-12 (use this one for parent's signature, required)

Piano 1

General Course Description: 

The student receives instructions in basic piano skills with an emphasis on learning to identify and read notes, play Major and Minor five finger-patterns, one octave Major scales hands separate, and a minimum of seven beginning repertoire. Students are required to furnish their own headphones and adapters.

Required Competencies and Skills for Articulation with the Los Angeles City College:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Play C, G, D, A, E, B, and F Major, and c, g, d, a, e, b, and f minor five-finger patterns, hands together.
2. Play I-IV-V7-I Cadences in C, G, F major, hands together
3. Play C, G, D, A, B, E, and F major scales, one octave, hands separately, using traditional fingerings.
4. Play a minimum of seven beginning repertoire pieces (one memorized) as selected by the instructor, demonstrating the application of correct rhythm and notes, dynamics, fingerings, and phrasing.
5. Read basic notation in treble and bass clef and identify time signatures and rhythm patterns.

 

Measurement Methods (include any industry certification or licensure):

Representative Assessment:

    1. Written quizzes
    2. Final Exam on playing technique and repertoire
    3. Grade of B or better to earn college credit

Piano 2

General Course Description: 

The student receives instructions in basic piano skills with an emphasis on learning to identify and read notes, play all Major and Minor five finger-patterns, all Major scales one octave hands together, and a minimum of Piano 2 repertoire. Students are required to furnish their own headphones and adapters.

Required Competencies and Skills for Articulation with the Los Angeles City College:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Play all Major and Minor 5-finger patterns, hands together, using traditional fingerings.
    2. Play all Major scales in one octave, hands together, using traditional fingerings.
    3. Play I-IV-I-V7-I cadences in C, G, D, A, E, B, and F Major, hands together, with syncopated pedaling, using traditional fingerings.
    4. Play a minimum of 7 Piano 2 repertoire pieces (one memorized) as selected by the instructor, demonstrating the application of correct rhythm and notes, dynamics, fingerings, and phrasing.

Demonstrate ability to sight read Piano 1 level piece(s) as selected by the instructor.
